When to Quit

ROULETTE

That game you see so often on TV, played with a ball in a wheel. It is played by up to eight players around a table, against the house.

How to play roulette.
There is no actual playing involved, in Roulette all you have to do is bet on which number the ball will end on, out of 31. It does, however, give the largest choice of bets of any game in the casino:

  • Outside bets (all lose on a 0 or 00)
  • Bet red or black: pays 1:1, simply a bet that the ball will land on either red or black (chances are even of each).
  • Bet odd or even: pays 1:1, simply a bet that the ball will land on either an odd or an even number. (Chances are even of each).
  • Bet low or high: pays 1:1, a bet that the ball will either land low (numbers 1-18) or high (19-31). (Chances are even of each).
Bet column: pays 2:1, a bet on any one of the three columns each containing 12 numbers. Place your chips at the top of the column (labelled 2 to 1) to place this bet. (Chances of winning are 1 in 3).
Bet on dozens: pays 2:1, a bet on either the first, second or third dozen as the number it lands on. (Chances of winning are 1 in 3).
    Inside bets
  • Standard ('straight-up') Bet: pays 35:1, a bet on any number (including 0 and 00). This is a rare occurrence. (Chances are 1 in 33).
  • Split bet: pays 17:1, basically a bet on any two consecutive numbers (including 0 and 00), basically twice as likely as the standard bet but with half the payout. (Chances are 1 in 16.5). Place your chip on the dividing line between the two numbers.
  • Street bet: pays 11 to 1, a bet covering three consecutive numbers.(Chances are 1 in 11). Place your chip on the outer line of the row to be bet on.
  • Corner bet: pays 8 to 1, a bet covering four numbers forming a square (chances are 1 in 8.25). Place your chip on the x where the 4 numbers converge.
  • Five number bet: pays 6:1 and can only be played on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. (Chances are 1 in 6.6). Place your chip on the intersection where 0 meets 1 and the rest of the first dozen.
  • Six number bet: pays 5:1 and covers two rows of numbers. (Chances are 1 in 5.5). Place your chip on an outer line where 2 rows meet.

Strategy for Roulette
There isn't much of a strategy for roulette, as it all comes down to where the ball lands. Some casinos will allow the 'surrender' rule, which applies only to outside bets paying out at 1:1. If the ball lands at 0 or 00 in this situation, and the 'surrender' is in place, you lose only half your bet instead of the whole thing, giving you a slight advantage.

Be aware that the house always holds the advantage on a roulette table, and though it is the same for most bets, it is highest on the five-number bet, which is the worst bet to play.

Don't be afraid to quit. If you're on a winning streak sometimes the fever will grip you, and you'll be tempted to let the whole thing run on one turn of the wheel, potentially costing you hundreds of dollars in winnings - don't let it.

Well, that's all the games I'm going to cover for now, thanks for reading and remember: gambling is a risky sport, so indulge in it in moderation!

All in all, be lucky!
